Health Week

Last week was 'Health Week' at Wigton Moor.  Many of our lessons were planned around this theme.

We did circuit training in PE:

Shuttle runs, start jumps, skipping and a rest stop.

Standing long jump, press ups and bench steps.

In maths, we looked at our diet and how we get our energy from food.  We then looked at our individual, daily energy requirements and our task was to plan a healthy diet to meet our needs.

A little chocolate is fine, but make sure you have something healthy too!

Our Incredible Learning Logs

As part of our year 6 Topic, The Victorians, we have produced some fantastic learning logs about Charles Dickens. After researching his life, many of the children linked their presentation to his work as and author and playwrite.  Please enjoy looking at this small selection of our fantastic work.

Lauren wrote her learning log as though Charles Dickens was speaking about his life.  She used different pictures of Charles, which show him getting older, for each caption - what a clever idea.

Tom presented his work as though his page was a stage.  He used various quotes from 'Oliver' to make his work appealing to his audience - very creative.

I loved the way Liam presented his research as a page from a 'Horrible Histories' book.  His title 'Dead Clever Dickens' was a brilliant play on words. 

Isher's learning log gave lots of information about Charles Dickens.  The orange squares at the right hand side of the page were quiz questions - I hope you were paying attention!



Bismah added a diary to her research with excerpts from the actual diary of Charles Dickens.  She cleverly changed her handwriting to look like it was deteriorating, as Dickens' did, after he was involved in a train crash.

Many more of the learning logs were given full marks.  If you did not manage to get 10 housepoints this time, have a look at some of the ideas from other people, and maybe next time  yours will be awarded full marks too.



The Great Chocolate Challenge

As part of our settling into year 6 activities, we held a teamworking challenge.

The brief was to create a tall structure, using only masking tape and newspaper, which would be strong enough to support a chocolate bar.  The children were split into groups to discuss their design and then create their tower.

As you can see from the photos, there were some interesting designs!

A great demonstration from Tom.  The final design resembles a table.  It was very sturdy, but just did not have enough height to be the winning design. 

  

Plan C - they made envelopes and stuffed them with paper.  A great idea, which was sturdy, but didn't have enough  height. 

This group made pieces of paper into balls and stuck them together.

This structure certainly had height, but just wasnt strong enough...the wind kept blowing it over!

Welcome Back

I hope that you have all had a very enjoyable summer holiday and are ready for your last year at Wigton Moor!

We have lots of exciting things planned for you this year.  As well as your residential to PGL, there will be many other visits to support your learning, including a visit to the Thackray Medical Museum , to learn about what life was like for people in Victorian times.

As it is linked to our history topic, we have reserved some tickets to see Oliver at the Grand Theatre. This is an evening performance and tickets will be available on a first come first served basis.  We will let you have more information in the next few weeks about the arrangements for this visit.

I am sure that you are all very excited to see the changes that have been made in school over the holidays.  I was really surprised on Monday to see how different school looks, with the fantastic group rooms that we now have.

I am really looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow.

Classroom Olympics

As part of our Olympic themed week, we held our own 'Classroom Olympics'  maths lesson. The events included:

• Straw javelin
• Cotton ball shot put
• Paper plate discus throw
• High Jump
• Giant step
• Side Step

The results were collated and the children designed their own databases to work out the overall results.

Well done Jamie. Overall winner with 4 gold medals and 4 medals over all. Closely followed by Robbie, with 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze, another super 4 medal haul and a fantastic effort!

Water Filters

As part of our Geography topic on water, following our visit to the water treatment works,  we made our own water filters.  

When we compared the dirty water with our filtered water, we found out that each of the filters had some success at cleaning water.  

Which filter would you choose as being the most efficient?
